  • On a purchase of Basic Economy fares you may now be able to get upgrades on seats, priority boarding and make same-day flight changes
  • Elite members of AAdvantage® can use their travel benefits on all types of tickets including Basic Economy fares

Previously, American Airlines had waived the Change Fees for all new and existing air tickets by the end of summer. i.e September 30,2020. So, if you have a flight ticket with American Airlines which has expired before September 30, 2020, then you can make use of this ticket for your further travel through December 31, 2021.

American Airlines Cancellation 24-hours policy

You can cancel your reservation tickets within 24 hours of your booking with a complete refund of your purchased ticket. The cancellation can occur for many reasons such as seat issues. All you need to know is how to upgrade seats on American Airlines. The 24-hours refund policy is applicable to all ticket types in case you are canceling your tickets.

If you have purchased your ticket on sale, the cancellation can be done only within 24 hours of your booking with a full refund, but after that, you can’t get it as sale tickets are usually non-refundable.

Moreover, if booked tickets are one from group tickets reservation then also you are not eligible for getting a ticket fund back.

How to Cancel or Reschedule the American Airlines flights? 

Follow these below steps to cancel or change your American Airlines reservation booking.

Step 1: Find your trip

Visit the official website of American Airlines and go to ‘Find your Trip’. In order to cancel your flight/trip, you will have to fill in your “Passenger First name” and “Passenger Last name” details. You will also need a 6 character confirmation i.e, Record locator. If you don’t know what your record locator number is you can avail it from the confirmation email that you received just after you booked your flight. 

Step 2: Choose your task from the toolbar

Next will be a pop-up page with options like “Change Trip” (to reschedule), “Cancel Trip” (to cancel), and “Change seats”. By clicking on the option you want, your request will be sent to American Airlines.

Step 3: Finally, Check your Email !

Lastly, you will get the confirmation message on your registered email. This will consist of your Refund code and a Ticket Number. You need to keep this email safe so that when you are going to rebook your ticket, you can get your previously canceled change or refund on your next ticket.

American Airlines Refund Policy

Canceling your ticket online is easy but you also have to inform them by calling their customer service center for booking your next flight. If you have booked your ticket through a travel agent or any broker then you should directly call them for arranging to rebook with the refund of your earlier ticket.

The refund policy of American Airlines states that, if your trip was canceled, you can use the value of the canceled ticket and seat payments for any future trip. As mentioned on the airline’s support page, apart from refundable tickets, items eligible for a refund mostly include:

  • Main Cabin Extra seats
  • Pet fees
  • Baggage fees
  • Preferred seats
  • Ticket of a deceased passenger
  • Same Day flight changes

You are promised to get a 24-hour time slot to cancel your flight ticket only if you have booked the ticket at least 2 days (48 hours) before the departure. The ticket type doesn’t matter here. Unfortunately, tickets bought as part of a group block won’t benefit under this rule. You are promised to receive a full refund. But the sale-imposed non-refundable taxes or service charges won’t be refunded if the trip was booked through our Reservations call center because that is an additional service.

Refund Policy on Refundable Tickets

American Airlines’ refund policy mentions that refundable tickets can be refunded online or by contacting Reservations. 

Refund Policy on Non-Refundable Tickets

If your ticket was non-refundable then if you have relevant documentation to support your case, you still can get a refund:

  • If your ticket was canceled within a 24 hours window after booking
  • If the passenger or the passenger’s companion dies
  • If the passenger is not allowed to travel due to government or military orders

If you try, you can at least get a partial refund if not fully, in the above case. 

Refunds for Products and Services

If you didn’t use any product or service provided, but you have paid for it, you can claim a refund. Products and services include:

  • Carrying an additional bag
  • Carrying a pet
  • Priority boarding
  • Same-day flight change / standby

Presently, American Airlines has a list of calls waiting for a refund process, so the process of getting your fund back can take around 7 days.

Important: In case American Airlines cancel your trip, they will inform you by mail on your registered email with a refund according to their norms. This mail contains your ticket number, which must be kept carefully since it will help you with your next booking. If you’re calling them directly or booking with the help of a travel agent, you can redeem this refund on your next booking.

How to submit a Refund request (Via Website)

The value of your ticket is safe. So if your trip has been canceled,  you can use the value of your unused ticket and seat payments for a future trip. Requesting a refund for your canceled American Airlines flight is quite easy. You need not do anything but follow the steps below.

Step 1: Check if your reservation is canceled

You’ll of course get a refund only on a canceled flight. So you need to first check if your trip has been canceled properly and you’ve received your cancelation confirmation message with a refund code and a ticket number on email. 

Step 2: Go to the refunds page

You can either access this direct link or search for “Request a Refund/ Refund” on the search panel of the official website, then go to “Receipts and Refunds” and click on “Request a Refund”. Here, go to the “Request a refund”  field.

Step 3: Enter your details and submit

Enter the Receipt Number that you got on the cancelation mail and enter your last name in the “Passenger Last Name” field. And then lastly, click the “Submit”  button. Keep in mind that this procedure will not be applicable to the Aadvantage award tickets.

How to check refund status

Follow these easy steps to check refund status:

Step 1 : Go to The refunds page

You can either access this direct link to the refund status page or search for “Request a Refund/ Refund” on the search panel of the official website, then go to “Receipts and Refunds” and click on “Request a Refund”. Here, go to the “Request a refund”  field.

Step 2: Go to “Check Refund Status”

There will be a blue-colored box with a tab named “Check refund status” on the right-hand side. Click on the tab.

Step 3: Enter Ticket no. and submit

Enter the ticket number you got on the cancelation mail and finally click on “Submit
