History

In 1930 the American airlines started via a union of more than 80 airlines. Robertson Aircraft Corporation and Colonial Air Transport are the two organizations from which American Airlines was generated. It was created in 1921 in Missouri, but it got merged in 1929 into one company, the Aviation Corporation.

History of American Airlines
History of American Airlines

In 1930 the company was rebranded as American Airways and made into an operating company. The corporation had to redo its routes into a system and was renamed to American Airlines because of the new laws and attrition of mail contracts which forced many airlines to reorganize. The airline grew into being the international carrier between 1970 and 2000 and purchased Trans World Airlines in 2001.

American Airlines had direct involvement in the development of the DC-3, which resulted in a lot of phone calls from the CEO C.R. Smith to Donald Douglas, as to replace the American’s Curtiss Condor II biplanes so he convinced resistant Douglas to design a sleeper aircraft that is to be based on DC-2.

The DC-2’s had 66 inches wide cabin, too small for side by side berths. As Smith informed Douglas about the American’s intentions to buy 20 aircraft, Douglas agreed to go ahead with the development of sleeper aircraft. On 17th December of 1935 ( 32nd anniversary of Wright Brothers’ flight at Kitty Hawk), the prototype DST (Douglas Sleeper Transport) first flew.

Its cabin was 92 in (2.3 m) wide, and a version with 21 seats rather than the 14–16 sleeping berths of the DST was given the designation DC-3. There was no prototype DC-3; the primary DC-3 built followed seven DSTs off the assembly line and was delivered to American Airlines. On June 26 1936, American Airlines inaugurated passenger service, with simultaneous flights from Chicago, Illinois, and Newark, New Jersey.

In 2011, because of a downturn within the airline industry, American Airlines’ parent company AMR Corporation filed for bankruptcy protection. In 2013, American Airlines merged with US Airways but kept the American Airlines name, because it was the better-recognized brand internationally; the mixture of the 2 airlines resulted within the creation of the biggest airline within the U.S., and ultimately the planet.
