The airline has established on 2nd Feb 2006 but started the operation on 23rd Oct 2006 to Ottawa. Porter Airlines’ launch was disputed, as it pitted Toronto residents trying to end or close the extension of the airport against business interests and a government agency concluded to perform the airport self-sufficient.
In April 2013, Porter stated development plans to attend new destinations in Western Canada, California, and Florida. To support the extension, Porter approached a temporary agreement to buy 12 107-seat Bombardier CS100 jets, with a prospective option to buy up to 18 more. Porter’s plans needed regulatory and equipment changes to its Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport hub.
By January 2014, the Toronto Port Authority stated that it would try $100 million from the federal government to extend base around the airport if the expansion programs and jets were supported for use at the airport. The other public hearing at Council was declared for January 27, 2014.
At that time, Toronto City Council stated it could not support the program without more studies from Ports Toronto, leading the body to initiate a sequence of examination and viability analyses.
