There are many ways to bring a pet to its final destination, including bringing it into the cabin, checking it as luggage, or transporting it as a commodity without its owner. The rules for pet transportation vary depending on your country and destination. On some air-crafts and certain destinations, pets may be restricted or limited. When booking your flights, indicate whether or not you plan to travel with your pet to find out whether pets are allowed and if they can travel in the cabin.

Pets in Cabin

Delta Air Lines allows dogs, cats, and poultry to travel to and from certain destinations in the boarding cabin, but a one-way fee is charged, which is charged at delta airline check-in.

The following restrictions apply to pets traveling as hand luggage:

  • Each customer can bring a pet house.
  • There are absolutely no military exceptions for any pets in the cabin.
  • Certain triangle planes cannot accommodate pets in the cabin.
  • Your pet must be small enough to fit comfortably in the kennel. It is important for an animal to leave room for its free movement, otherwise, it may panic. The kennel should be installed directly under the seat, directly in front of the customer.
  • Remember that the maximum size of a portable kennel is determined by the type of aircraft. Please contact the Global Sales Support or Delta Airlines Reservations beforehand to determine the appropriate kennel or carrier or cage size.
  • Pets must be in the Delta boarding area (during boarding and disembarking), in the Delta Airport waiting room, and when on the plane, must stay in the dog house (door locked).
  • Pets must be 10 weeks old to travel abroad.
  • If traveling to the United States from another country, the pet must be at least 16 weeks old, and the EU travel must be at least 15 weeks old.

Pets in Cargo

Delta Air Lines’ cargo system is dedicated to the safe and reliable transportation and custody of all kinds of live animals. Provide well-trained ground staff to provide personalized care for your pet, and their cargo control center agents will actively track every step of their journey. Temperature-controlled trucks and terminal waiting areas prevent exposure to extreme temperatures. On March 20, 2020, Delta Cargo had announced a temporary ban on the shipment of pets all over the world and live animal shipments (to/from and across Europe and the UK) in response to flight schedule changes related to COVID-19. From April 1 until further notice, the pet ban applies to all pets transported in goods over the local and international network, with the following exceptions:

  • Military and diplomat
  • Service and support animals that cannot be accommodated in the passenger cabin (prior reservation required)
  • There are no exceptions to the live animal ban for flights to/from and across Europe and the UK.

  • The expected temperatures must be between 20 ° F and 80 ° F at each location on the animal’s journey with the Delta, so that to accept an animal shipment, including on the ground of origin, transportation, and destination.
  • – Temperature restrictions adjusted to 80 ° F (27 ° C) maximum and at least 20 ° F (-7 ° C) during the time the animal is at any station during transportation

Pets in Hold

Suspended Pets (AVIH) is a service provided by Delta Air Lines to the US Army (please see requirements below) for active duty or FSO Foreign Service Officers (FSO) and spouses, as well as any well-trained service or support that cannot be traveled on an airplane Animal cabin. All animals that do not meet these exceptions are not allowed to travel as checked baggage and must be shipped through Delta Cargo.

U.S Military Personnel/Foreign Service Officers

Delta Air Lines only accepts animals as active-duty baggage of the U.S. Army or active foreign officers (FSO) and their spouses and receives valid transportation orders. Pets must comply with federal regulations, including appropriate documentation based on current policies and procedures. Delta Airlines manage booking also provides some help.

Military and diplomatic service personnel who meet the specified exceptions must book pets as checked baggage at least 48 hours before departure. For more information, you can check out delta Airlines official website and company contacts.

All other animals, including reptiles and primates (including lemurs, monkeys, orangutans, gorillas, and chimpanzees) must be transported as cargo.

  • Every time a pet is registered at the airport, an animal fee is charged. The cost will be assessed at each stopover point.
  • Exclusions may apply to routes that require more than 6 hours of connection.
  • Animals are not included in the free baggage allowance or free baggage allowance held by American Express (AMEX).
  • No volume or overweight fees are charged.

Kind Of Container Acceptable

  • The pet container should be made with the rigid plastic, wood, metal, or any solid material. The airline will not accepted a cardboard kennels container.
  • The container should not have wheels and if it has, it should be removable.
  • Container should have a proper vantilation on 3 sides (door side included). Cantainer must have the vantilation on the top by 2/3rd.
  • Pet container should have the handles to hold it properly.
  • The container should be locked properly and be sure the door will not open in transit.
  • Your pet container must have a label tag of “Live Animal” on the top of the container and at least one side of the container.
  • Bed, shredded paper or towel should have inside the container.
  • Pet food and water should be inside the container, so that you do not need to open the door when they feed.

Pets in Connecting Flights

  • Delta Air Lines does not accept animals traveling on multiple connection points.
  • Delta Air Lines will not check animals on separate tickets, as a separate fee may be charged.
  • The customer must collect the animal and inspect the animal together with the first transportable carrier on the attached ticket.
  • If DL006 ticket inventory is used and all flights in the itinerary are triangle flights, there may be exceptions for individual tickets.
  • Except for SkyTeam partner airlines, Delta Air Lines cannot screen animals through other airlines (OAL). If transferring to another SkyTeam partner airline, please contact Global Sales Support or Delta Air Lines Reservation Center for information on pending pet requirements.
  • The customer will need to contact another airline to confirm whether the animal accepts checked luggage and carrier fees.
  • Customers must pick up the animals that have been screened by Delta at the contact point and recheck the pet with another airline. Please make sure to add 45 minutes to your legal contact time for the transfer.

Kind Of Animals Acceptable

  • The cargo of delta airlines do accept all species of live animals for transportation, with the following restrictions:
    • Live animal shipments between carriage or transport to other air carriers. Delta accepts live animal cargoes for transportation only on the Delta Road System.
    • Live animal admission to the UK is limited to properly prepared and documented shipments of dogs, cats, rodents, insects, and live fish. All other live animal shipments are prohibited to the UK.
    • Non-human primates, regardless of species, are only accepted when shipped between zoological organizations, communities, wildlife sanctuaries, or rehabilitation centers. All other shipments of non-human primates, including those between private parties, are prohibited. Non-human primates (when acceptable) should be completely weaned and at least 2 years old.
  • Delta Cargo has banned the shipment of each of the following:
    • Lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo hunting trophies
    • Dogs or cats for research purposes

Policy For Service Animals

For the safety and health of everyone, we require documentation for clients traveling with an emotional support animal in the cabin. Each client will be limited to one Emotional Support Animal. Trained service animals

We recommend that all customers traveling with a trained service animal carry the current veterinary health profile of the animal. Delta reserves the right to review these documents at any time. In some cases, clients may be required to show an animal veterinary health form and/or vaccination record or other evidence of current vaccination (it must be within one year of the date of travel).

Emotional Support & Psychiatric Service Animals

Submit your emotional support and animal psychiatry service documents at least 48 hours before your flight. Currently, we require documentation no more than a year old (prior to the first flight in the itinerary) from a certified mental health professional who indicates the need for an emotional support animal, as well as an animal health certificate including verification of rabies vaccine. Documentation can be supplied in digital format, and a professional license number is recommended, but not required. Inappropriate Service or Support Animal Behavior

We know service and support animals are highly trained working animals. We will only refuse to transport an animal if it engages in disruptive or aggressive behavior such as:

  • Wastage
  • Bite
  • Jumping on passengers, flight attendants, or staff
  • Comfort in the gate or cab area
  • Excessive barking, not in response to a therapist’s need or distress
  • Eat seat back tray tables
