Air Canada Airlines History
TCA was formed through federal legalization on 11th April 1937 as a subsidiary of the Canadian National Railways. The new department planned for linking cities through the airline by the government control from the Atlantic Coast to the Pacific Coast. Therefore, Canadian Airways bought two Lockheed Model 10 Electras along with one Boeing Stearman biplane.
Passengers’ flight started on 1st Sept 1937. On first July 1938 TCA hired its first flight attendant! st April 1939 the route from Montreal to Vancouver started. The airline has grown with 579 employees by Jan 1940. Later on, the Canadian Pacific Airlines in the year 1942 suggested joining with TCA. But got rejected by William Lyon Mackenzie King. During World War II, Air travel increased. And CP started a few international Routes. In 1964, TCA became the national airline of Canada.
In 1976, Air Canada became an independent Crown Corporation. Air Canada was privatized in 1988 and they sold 43% of their share to the public market. On Oct 7th, 1987 it has become the first airline in the world with a fleet-wide non-smoking policy and finally, it became completely privatized by 1989.
During the 21st century, it has become the 20th world largest airline in the world. From 16th March 2016 negotiation for buying the Transat A.T. was going on and finally, by Aug 2019 Transat A.T. approved 95% of its shareholder acquisition by Air Canada.
