The luggage allowance for flights to/from Japan depends on the country of departure/destination and ticket options available. Carry on baggage Policy in Finnair
To make the flight as smooth as possible and comfortable for you and all onboard passengers, it pays off to pack the carry-on baggage light and tight and bring only the most necessary things with you on board. Carry on baggage allowance for economy class passengers:
- For one piece of carry-on baggage, the maximum dimensions should be(length x width x height)55 cm x 40 cm x 23 cm will be in terms of inches like this(22 in x 16 in x 9 in)
- You can bring one personal thing such as a small backpack, or a small handbag, or a small laptop bag maximum dimensions should be (length x width x height) 40 cm x 30 cm x 15 cm that will be in terms of inches like this (16 in x 12 in x 6 in)
- The whole maximum combined weight should not exceed more than 8 kg (17.5 lb.)
You should carry the required mobility aid to the plane, such as a cane or elbow crutches. Kids have the same baggage allowance as adults in the same booking class. Children who do not have a reserved seat do not have their own baggage allowance. Please keep in mind that all things purchased at the airport, including tax-free items, count against your carry-on luggage allowance.
Please ensure that your luggage is under the above-described size and weight limits. If you exceed your allowance, you will have to check in your extra baggage and pay the applicable fees.
Special baggage allowance in Finnair baggage policy
Depending on your baggage allowance, the number of bags you have with you, and the size of your special baggage, you can bring special luggage on Finnair flights either as part of your regular luggage allowance or for an extra fee. On your ticket, your luggage allowance is printed, e.g. 1 PC means one suitcase. You may also use Finnair airlines Manage booking or the Finnair app to review it. Usually, special baggage is anything larger or heavier than regular baggage with special types of equipment. If your sports equipment is packed to fit under the above-mentioned weight and size restrictions, one regular piece of luggage is considered. Often, as part of the usual luggage allowance, most musical instruments can be carried.

Prohibited items in Finnair baggage policy
Some items are considered hazardous and are not allowed as carry-on luggage on board, and some items or substances are not permitted as checked baggage on board an aircraft.
- Weapons, firearms, and other projectile discharging instruments.
- Items with a sharp edge or devices for workmen that can be used to endanger the aircraft’s safety.
- Devices that are explicitly designed to shock or immobilize.
- Tools that have the ability to either cause serious injury or risk the safety of an aircraft.
- Blunt instruments that, when used to kick, may be used to inflict serious injury.
Incendiary and Explosives substances and devices which have the ability to cause serious injury or of posing a threat to the aircraft’s safety, including:
- Munitions,
- Caps blasting,
- Fuses and detonators,
- The mines, grenades, and other military explosive shops,
- Pyrotechnics and other fireworks,
- Canisters and cartridges which generate smoke,
- Dynamite, bombs of gunpowder, and rubber.
FAQs
What if I have more bags? Finnair Allow me to travel with more bags?
Passengers who are traveling with extra bags then the extra bags are accepted as checked baggage and the cost as per extra baggage allowance is charged. If Finnair operates all of the flights on your route, you can pay in advance for up to three additional bags or sports equipment that fit within the dimensions and weight of a normal bag. And if you pay online for the extra baggage then the possibility of getting discounts rather than paying at the airports.
When I upgrade my travel class, does my baggage allowance change?
When you upgrade from Economy to Business Class, you are allowed to bring one additional bag for free. Two pieces of carry-on luggage and a personal item are allowed in Business Class, with a combined weight limit of 10kg. The information on your original ticket has not been updated, but don’t worry, the Finnair check-in system has been updated. If you upgrade from Economy to Premium Economy, your baggage allowance remains the same as it was on your initial ticket.
Is it possible for me to share my baggage allowance with someone?
The baggage allowance listed on your booking confirmation or ticket is per passenger and cannot be shared with another passenger. A heavy bag charge will be collected at the airport if checked luggage weighs between 23kg and 32kg (50–70lb). You can bring at least one carry-on bag to the cabin in addition to the checked luggage allowance.
