History of Hawaiian airlines

On the 1st of October 1941, the company changed its name to Hawaiian Airlines when the company phased out Sikorsky S-38 and Sikorsky S-43. The company started its first charter service to South Pacific and then they spread out throughout the Pacific using Douglas DC-8 in 1985.

Hawaiian Airlines’ first scheduled operation out of Hawaii with an aircraft providing daily Honolulu-Los Angeles services. Hawaiian airlines added additional aircraft to its fleet and opened the services to other West Coast cities like Seattle, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Anchorage, and Portland throughout 1985 and 1986 which further placed Hawaiian airlines in competition with main United States airlines.

Through Pago Pago International Airport, Hawaiian Airlines was able to enter the international market of New Zealand and Australia with one-stop flights in 1986. Kapalua Airport opened in 1987 on the west side of Maui, it was designed with a 3000-foot runway which allowed them to handle large aircraft.

American airlines rent out their 6 DC-10s to Hawaiian airlines and provided maintenance on the planes. Between 2002 and 2003 the DC-10s were retired and so Hawaiian Airlines with Boeing 767 and DC-9s were replaced by the new Boeing 717.

Hawaiian airlines started non-stop daily flights from Honolulu to San Jose, California on the 1st of October, 2005. In March 2008, Hawaiian airlines started with non-stop flights to Manila in the Philippines which was the main expansion since the bankruptcy in 2005 June.
