Sun Country Airlines is an American ultra-low-cost airline and by passengers carried, it is also the eleventh largest in the United States. The airline serves overall 86 routes in these destinations in the United States, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean, and operates focus cities at Dallas/Fort Worth and Portland, Oregon. It also co-operates with cargo flights for Amazon Air.
History
With the help of a sole Boeing 727-200 plane, the airline began its operations in the month of January 1983. Sun Country Airlines consisted of 16 flight attendants, 1 office person, 3 mechanics person, and 16 pilots as the original staff members.
The chief pilot Captain Jim Olsen was also the first president and the founder of the company. Joan Smith-Olsen, his wife was the head of Inflight operations and she also acted as the Chief Flight Attendant. The headquarters was located in 1988 in Minneapolis Saint Paul International Airport.
Due to some financial troubles the company had to suspend its services in the year 2001. Whitebox Advisors and Petter Group Worldwide acquired the airlines in July 2006.
Stan Gadek former Chief Financial officer of AirTran Airways and the replacement for the interim Chief executive officer Jay Salmen was done in 2008. The airline was almost finished due to the revelation of financial fraud and the heavy recession in the year 2008.
Due to rising fuel costs, Sun Country Airlines scaled back its summer schedule and laid off 45 of the pilots from the 156 pilots they have. Some of the flights were eliminated like Los Angeles and San Francisco due to the reduced carrier in September 2008.
The airline started charging for the check-in baggage. FBI discovered that Sun Country Airlines went through a huge loss on a high scale and that Tom Petters resigned. Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection was filed by Sun Country Airlines on the 6th of October, 2008.
Davis family owners of Cambria bought Sun Country Airlines out of bankruptcy with 34 million dollars in July 2011 and Marty Davis the CEO of Cambria became the Chairman of Sun Country Airlines.
Zarir Erani was hired as the new president and CEO for Sun Country Airlines in 2015. Erani was replaced by Davis as the interim CEO and President. After a week was passed of Erani stepping down, Jude Bricker former of Allegiant Air was appointed as the CEO for the Airlines in 2017.
