History of Alaska Airlines

Only two companies started their flight service in Anchorage, Alaska that was McGee Airways and Star Air Service. Linious Mac McGee and Harvey Barnhill founded Barnhill and McGee Airlines which became McGee Airlines some months later and was operated and solely owned by Mac McGee.

Mac McGee sold his Airlines to Star Air Service but came back later to manage the Star Air Service. After many more mergers, the Star Air Service name was changed a lot, since 1944 they stuck with one name that was Alaska Airlines.

Alaska Airlines has worked a lot in historic times like Operation Magic Carpet, the airlift of many Yemenite Jews to Israel in 1949, and the Berlin Airlift in 1948.

By the late 1960s, Alaska Airlines merged with Alaska Coastal-Ellis and Cordova Airlines which strengthened the operating base for the airlines. The airlines stretched from Fairbanks south to Ketchikan and down to Seattle, and also Alaska Airlines made the headlines at the time of the cold war they even made headlines with their charter flights going to the Soviet Union.

In 1972, Alaska Airlines was in financial trouble, which could have cost them their company. Ron Cosgrave and Bruce Kennedy came on board and those two men set up work goals and brought people together. They improved on-time performance and won the trust of creditors.

Plus with the construction of the trans-Alaska pipeline, things got easier like carrying equipment, supplies, and workers. The flight was differentiated by giving outstanding customer service, which became an amazing approach for the airlines as it helped the company to grow with a record of straight nineteen years of profits.

By 1979, many airlines were deregulated which gave Alaska Airlines a chance to grow. Alaska Airlines expanded throughout the west coast of the United States. In 1987 Alaska Airlines joined forces with Horizon Air and Jet America which also committed to outstanding customer service.

By the end of the 1980s, the fleet size was tripled in size. With so much of an increase in the fleet size, the route map also included services to Russia and Mexico.

In 2001, Alaska Airlines’ services opened up for the East Coast to Washington D.C. Since then the airline established a major foothold in the other cities of the Midwest and East Coast of the United States.

Did you know, that Alaska Airlines was the first in North America to sell online tickets and the first in the world to let customers check-in and print boarding passes with the help of the internet?

By December 2016, Alaska Airlines acquired Virgin America to create West Coast’s premier airline. The two airlines got an operating certificate from FAA and now it operates as a single airline under the brand Alaska.
